MIP to Continue Vital Works in Torres Strait

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) has secured $12 million from the Australian Government to continue the next phase of the region’s largest-ever capital works initiative to date, the Major Infrastructure Program (MIP).

TSRA Chairperson Mr Toshie Kris, said MIP will now enter a fourth stage to complement the important projects delivered through Stages One, Two and Three.

“MIP Stage Three will end on 30 June and with this additional funding, MIP will be able to further improve and upgrade Torres Strait’s environmental infrastructure and in turn, enhance the region’s environmental health outcomes for at least another two years,” said Mr Kris.

“Since commencement in 1998 MIP has delivered clean water supplies, reticulated sewerage systems, much needed subdivisional works, all-weather sealed roads, and safe drainage as well as improved waste management facilities in 15 outer island and 2 Northern Peninsula Area communities.

“These works have improved our people’s living conditions and subsequently had a positive impact on health trends, contributing to a reduction in environmental health risks.

“With the additional funding, MIP Stage 4 will proceed in July and include the commencement of:

• the Masig Sewerage and Water Project;
  
• the Warraber Sewerage Project; and
  
• the Mabuiag Sewerage and Water Project.

“Even though this new funding will allow MIP to continue its life-changing work for another two years, additional support is required to match the Queensland Government’s current commitment to the Program.

“There is still much more work needed to be done before the living standards of the Indigenous people of this region are brought to the same level that is currently being enjoyed by mainstream Australia.

“It is paramount that MIP is extended beyond 2009 to fully complete and build on the initial works of the preceding Stages so that all of our communities not only have access to essential environmental infrastructure but also the capacity to maintain them.

“I would like to thank the Australian Government for its commitment to MIP and for sharing TSRA’s aim to achieve a better quality of life for the Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people of this region - I look forward to working in partnership with them to ensure that this vital program continues to produce lasting and positive outcomes for our communities,” said Mr Kris

The Major Infrastructure Program is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Government and delivered in partnership by the TSRA and the Queensland Department of Local Government, Planning, Sport and Recreation.
